DDR5 vs DDR4: Is It Time to Upgrade Your RAM?

New AMD AM5 and Intel 12th-gen-and-later boards support DDR5, and prices have dropped a lot.

Speed and latency

DDR5 runs at much higher speeds (5600 to 7200 MT/s) but with higher latency. In games the result is usually a small but real gain.

What we recommend

  1. Building new on AM5 or LGA1700/1851: go DDR5, 32 GB (2x16 GB).
  2. Upgrading an older DDR4 system: stay on DDR4 and add capacity.

Do not mix kits

Buy RAM as a matched kit. Mixing sticks can force the whole set down to the slowest speed.
